What do you think about "Speed Dating"?
Speed dating is when you have a certain number of guys and a certain number of girls, and they rotate, to spend about 10 minutes with one another. Then they can ask a shadchan who is there to pursue it further.

I think speed dating has pros and cons-with the cons outweighing the pros. On the upside-it gives you a chance to meet guys/girls in an appropriate setting, while being without the pressures of a standard 4/5 hour date which can be a real waste of time if your date is a failure (in speed dating, you'll find this out in ten minutes and be done with it). However, it places way too much emphasis on first impressions. Yes, one must be attracted to his/her date, but speed dating basically gives you a chance to see if you experience love at first sight-which we know only exists in movies. You really can't judge a book by its cover-which is what speeed dating is doing. I think there are other viable options where guys/girls can meet each other in an appropriate way like at singles events

I agree with anon- is it annoying to walk into a date where it's "over before it started" and have to suffer for 3 hours with someone who's not worth your time? Absolutely.
But the opposite extreme, speed dating, is unfair to some people. Some people are nervous to begin with, and need a chance to get comfortable. In speed dating, by the time one gets comfortable, he/she has already been dumped.
Perhaps a happy medium would be to have 1-2 hour dates be standard (especially the first dates), rather than the current 3-4 hour standard, which can be quite draining. Then again, if some people go for 3-4 hours and then a guy only goes with a girl for 1-2 hrs, she might feel like garbage. I guess you can't make everyone happy.

But this way your eliminate people quickly without having to suffer a few hours, and you get to see who is for you. I don't think it should replace Shidduch dating as we know it, but I think it would be nice to mainstream it.

Michelle-You may eliminate people-but for the wrong reasons. How many people do you know that knew their spouse was "the one" in the first ten minutes? I don't know that many. It's not realistic to think that you will know enough about a person in ten minutes to say yes/no. Yes, occasionally there will someone who makes you nauseous and you will be glad to be done with it in ten minutes. But those are a minority.
