I'm no rabbi, but I don't see how it will harm your job if you don't shake hands. From a halachic perspective, I don't know if it's ok or not, but people these days are VERY tolerant and open minded and will not be shocked if you explain to them why you can't (believe me-they've seen stranger things). Yes, some may be offended and it takes guts to refuse a handshake, but I do think it's worth the 30 second discomfort to uphold these sacred laws that are only there for your protection.
if the woman in question is butt-ugly, i don't see what the shaila is. if she's good looking, it's probably better to stay away, though i can see some guys try to rely on the hetter in those situations in particular. oy, what can you do!?

i've heard yes - these days, chances are it will hurt your job not to shake hands.
