Is it better to have a DVD player at home and not go to movies, or to only go to movies b/c you're not "bringing it into the house"?

My Rosh Yeshiva says it's better to go to movies, this way you don't bring garbage into your house.

I think that both situations have definite downsides. Bringing a DVD player "into your home" obviously brings with it problems. And movie theatres aren't such a simple solution either. The atmosphereat a theatre is not something one should regularly expose oneself to. All in all, how about neither of them? Is it so hard to live without movies?

Anon is right you know.
"Is it better to add poison to your drink and then gulp it down - or rather gulp down the drink and then the poison?"

Either way you aint dancin.

If we can focus on the differences between the theater and the DVD, we would first need someone’s evaluation who knows both very well. Unfortunately, someone who is well acquainted with either format is really not a reliable source for the correct answer to the question...

My thoughts based on the following assumptions:
Assuming #1: The movie does not contain anything "inappropriate".

Assuming #2: There is no issur of bitul Torah or moshav leitzim.

Assuming #3: There is no problem with doing what by now many non-Jews have deemed a detriment to society - and to ones brain.

Assuming #4: The money for the DVD (and DVD Player) or the money for the theater *and* time spent watching is not against a persons parent's wishes, or acquired through any form of geneivah.

Assuming #5: That watching will not bring a person to lie about it when asked point blank. (Sheker is a great way to keep oneself from doing things he/she is afraid of being asked at a later date, "Did you do this?". Presidents are not exempt… Also, starting a two sided life at a young age is the surest way to future failure - ask around.)

Assuming #6: (Really part of #1,#3) - You are convinced 100% that it will not affect your attitude to those that don't watch/go; to Yiddishkeit in general; and to your ability to concentrate on more important things.

Assuming #7: You are A-okay with knowing that your grandchildren have a grandparent that enjoyed killing time ;-)

Assuming #8: You won't get upset at events/people that demand your time for more/less important time expenders than the movie.

Assuming #9: You don't care that by supporting “that” industry you are basically pushing away "raglei hashechina" in this world.

Assuming #10: Your heiligeh neshama is worth that one "Ooh" or laugh you may get out of the time spent.

Assuming all this - I believe that privately watching is better (less chance of chillul H-ashm b'rabim) but it would be nice to include someone older in your choice so that you have a "sponsor" (ala Alcoholics Anonymous) when you need help getting out -- which can be done but is a *Major*, major pain.

P.S. There are poskim who posited that movies are a form of avodah zara.

Oh, one more thing:
Assuming #11: You watch/go without convincing someone else to follow suit - even implicitly (children perhaps).

For adults themselves, obviously neither option is ideal, however, in terms of your children, it is obviously better to take them to movies rather than bring it in the home... it gives them less access, and will hence be less of a distraction. Futhermore, keeping it out of the house will enable your kids to be better students (in terms of HW), more productive (HW, chores, productive and healthier activities, etc.), and further develope their creativity.
